Welcome to Dunkirk Museum 1940 - Operation Dynamo
You will discover the complete history of the Battle of Dunkirk and of operation Dynamo 26th May - 4th June 1940

The Museum is located in the fortifications that were built in 1874 to reinforce France`s coastal defence.
Bastion 32 served as the headquarters of the French and Allied forces during the Battle of Dunkirk and operation Dynamo.

After the *phoney war*; on the 10 of May 1940; Germany launched an offensive on the neutral countries: Holland, Belgium and Luxembourg.
Driven from the fields, the French and British armies withdrew to Dunkirk, fighting all the way with the intention of evacuating by the sea. 400 000 soldiers were trapped in a narrow area that was the target of intense bombing by enemy air forces. Around 1400 British and French vessels of all kinds, including pleasure boats were to evacuate 340 000 men to England in 9 days.
Dunkirk and its port were to be completely destroyed.

This summer, the Dunkirk Tourism Office organises daily guided walks along the shooting locations of the Hollywood blockbuster and discover the secrets of the making of "Dunkirk". Our guide will also provide historical facts about the battle of Dunkirk and Operation Dynamo. The tour, in French and in English, starts at 15:00 in front of the Dunkirk beach Tourist Office and takes about 1h30.

Several epic scenes of the acclaimed Hollywood movie "Dunkirk" were shot on location in and around Malo-les-Bains, the seaside resort of Dunkerque. Our English speaking guide takes you on a tour in the footsteps of actors like Fionn Whitehead and Harry Styles.
Director Christopher Nolan insisted on filming as many scenes as possible in Dunkirk, on the sites where the battle actually took place.
You'll see that no expenses were spared to recreate an authentic atmosphere. Some of the streets of Malo les Bains look exactly as they do in the first scenes of the film, except for the cars. And then there is the beach of course, where 1500 extras formed the queues of soldiers awaiting their turn to evacuate, on the same North Sea beaches as the troops did in 1940.
At the end of the walk, our guide will show you the East Mole, the breakwater that played a decisive role during Operation Dynamo (May-June 1940). More than two thirds of the 338.000 allied soldiers were evacuated from the East Mole. The mole was partly rebuilt for the needs of the shooting.

During the French summer holidays, from 7th July to 26th August 2018, we offer regular tours every day at 15:00. Price per person: € 6.

Discover the incredible story of Operation Dynamo with our exclusive 'Dynamo Tour', a trip back in time which pays tribute to all the allied soldiers involved in the operation and who created 'The Dunkirk Spirit', a symbol of hope and resistance.

During a pleasant tour on board our car or minivan, our guide will introduce you to the unmissable sites of Operation Dynamo. It will also lead you on the tracks of the shooting of the movie 'Dunkirk' directed by Christopher Nolan, released in July 2017. During the tour, we will stop at the following memorial places:

  • The evacuation beaches

The beautiful, wide sandy beaches are very peaceful nowadays. Things were quite different in the spring 1940. Imagine being a soldier of the BEF, hoping desperatly to climb on board one of the Dunkirk Little Ships to escape the 'Hell of Dunkirk'...

  • The port

The East Mole in the port was the point where most of the soldiers were evacuated. We'll make a stop at an impressive bunker, built by the Germans during the occupation, to see the preserved part of the original East Mole.

  • British Memorial and Cemetery

The impressive British Memorial commemorates the memory of the 4528 soldiers of the British Expeditionary Force who died during 1940 and who have no known grave. Next to the memorial is a cemetery of 810 graves of British soldiers. Most of them were killed defending the perimeter of Dunkirk during the evacuation operations in May-June 1940.
