“God made Cabernet Sauvignon, whereas the Devil made Pinot Noir.”
André Tchelistcheff

Pinot Noir is a favorite of sommeliers and wine lovers alike. Winemakers try to tame this temperamental cépage, but it always obeys mother earth – it’s why each terroir and each vintage produces a different expression. Explore the delicate subtleties and nuances of this multi-faceted varietal in its ancient birthplace with our Pinot Noir Experience. Our expert sommeliers will guide you through the rich heritage of the Pinot Noir vine, it’s coveted fruit, rootstock varieties and ideal viticulture. To best understand the relationship between terroir and the different characteristics of Pinot Noir, this experience reveals how the grapes of Clos Marey-Monge can make such a dramatic impact in the glass.

Program covers the following:

  • Orientation
  • History of Pinot Noir Cultivars
  • Origin of Pinot Noir Wines
  • Pinot Noir at Château de Pommard
  • Viticulture and Biodynamics
  • Terroir, Soils and Climats and Expression
  • Vendange, Vinification, Aging and Blending
  • Tasting Techniques
  • Vertical Pinot Noir Tasting

What you will learn:

The provenance of Pinot Noir dates back more than a millennia when it became the first grape variety to be officially recognized, and named, in Beaune. On this one-of-a-kind experience, you will learn the origin and history of this noble grape while walking among its Burgundian birthplace, where the world’s finest expression of Pinot Noir is found.

Our sommelier will guide you through a year in the life of the vines: from pruning, hibernation, bud break and the harvest. You’ll learn how these delectable fruits become delicate wines through maceration, fermentation, aging and blending – methods which combine to create our signature winemaking process. The real education, of course, will be for your tastebuds when they experience, side by side, the Burgundy Pinot Noirs from different terroirs and different vintages from the same terroir. Prepare to be amazed.

What you'll taste:

The highlight of the Pinot Noir Experience takes place in one of our private tasting rooms. Four Burgundy Pinot Noir appellations from the Côte de Nuits and Côte de Beaune, all vinified at Chateau de Pommard, will be savored before the main event: a vertical tasting of four vintages of our Clos Marey-Monge Monopole. A moment to savor.

Tasting list included, 2 Côte de Nuits Pinot Noir, 2 Côte de Beaune Pinot Noir, 4 Vintages of Clos Marey-Monge, Monopole (2011, 2012, 2013, 2014).
